What Changed in ISO 9001:2026
The 2026 edition is an evolution, not a rewrite. Your 2015 system remains the foundation, but auditors will now look for evidence in a few sharper areas:
Quality Culture & Ethics (5.1.1, 7.3)
Top management must actively promote a quality culture and ethical behaviour, and people must be aware of it. Auditors look for behaviour on the shopfloor, not a new poster.
Risks vs Opportunities (6.1)
Risks and opportunities are now addressed separately, and the effectiveness of both must be evaluated, including in management review.
Planning of Changes (6.3)
Changes such as new machines, ERP, suppliers or restructuring must be communicated, monitored and reviewed for results, not just planned.
Organizational Knowledge (7.1.6)
Knowledge must be retained, applied and shared across the whole QMS: critical for plants dependent on a few senior operators.
Internal Audit Objectives (9.2.2)
Every internal audit now needs a defined objective in addition to scope and criteria, making audits purposeful instead of routine.
Climate Change (4.1, 4.2)
The 2024 climate amendment is built in: decide whether climate change is a relevant issue and consider related stakeholder needs.
Transition deadline: September 2029. ISO 9001:2015 certificates stay valid during the 3-year transition, but certification bodies will get busy close to the cutoff.

1How long does it take to implement ISO 9001:2026?
For a fresh implementation, typically 3 to 6 months depending on size, complexity and existing processes. For an organization already certified to ISO 9001:2015, the transition usually needs 6 to 10 weeks of focused work before the transition audit.
2Is my ISO 9001:2015 certificate still valid?
Yes. ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain valid during the 3-year transition period that started on 16 September 2026 and ends in September 2029. After the deadline, 2015 certificates will no longer be valid, so plan your transition with your certification body well in advance.
3Should a new company certify to 2015 or 2026?
Go directly for ISO 9001:2026. Certifying to 2015 now means doing a second transition within three years. Discuss availability of 2026 audits with your certification body; Qualitech builds new systems to the 2026 requirements from day one.
4Do we need a dedicated Quality Manager?
No. There is no mandatory 'Management Representative'. Top management is directly accountable for the QMS and, under the 2026 edition, for actively promoting a quality culture and ethical behaviour, though delegating operational QMS tasks to competent personnel is common.
